What WeTree is for

- Use WeTree only for lawful family-history and collaboration purposes.
- Respect the privacy of living people whose information you add.

What WeTree provides
- Private by default — families are not publicly searchable.
- You own your content — with export options where your role allows.
- Collaboration with control — roles, optional change review, and audit history.
- Operational care — industry-standard security and backups, without perfection guarantees.

- Uploading harmful, harassing, defamatory, or infringing content.

Official Terms and Conditions
These Terms are a contract between you and Steven Quince, doing business as Askewsoft ("Askewsoft," "we," "us," "our"), located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States.
By creating an account, accepting an invitation, or using WeTree, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. Agreement and changes
These Terms incorporate our Privacy Policy and Refund Policy. We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be notified before they take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
2. Intended use of WeTree
WeTree helps families and authorized collaborators document, organize, and preserve family history in a private, permission-controlled environment — including trees, relationships, events, media, stories, sources, and GEDCOM import/export where permitted by your role.
WeTree is not intended for:
- Publishing family information to the general public
- DNA analysis or health assessment
- Legal identity or inheritance verification
- Harassment, surveillance, or non-consensual data collection
- Commercial scraping or resale of other users' data
Unless we explicitly offer public sharing (none today), family data is visible only to authenticated users authorized for that family.
3. Eligibility and accounts
You must meet the minimum age required in your jurisdiction (at least 13). During early access, registration may require a valid invitation. You are responsible for safeguarding your credentials and all activity under your account.
4. Roles, permissions, and family administration
Data is organized into private families with Owners, Admins, Editors, Contributors, and Viewers. You agree to respect role limits and administrator decisions. Removal from a family by an Admin is separate from platform-level account termination.
5. Your content and data
You retain ownership of content you submit. You grant Askewsoft a limited license to host, store, process, and display your content solely to operate WeTree for you and users you authorize. You represent that you have rights to your content and a reasonable basis to include information about living individuals.
We do not sell your content or use it for third-party advertising.
6. WeTree assurances
- Private by default — no public family directory
- Permission-aware collaboration — role-based access
- Change transparency — family-visible audit log
- Data ownership — export paths consistent with permissions
- Security practices — reasonable measures for the Service
- Abuse response — channels to report violations
These describe product intent and operational goals, not warranties beyond §12 or applicable law.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to harm or harass others; violate privacy; infringe intellectual property; misrepresent facts; break security; misuse automation; misuse invitations; or use WeTree unlawfully. We may remove or restrict violating content.
8. Family collaboration and invitations
Invitations grant access according to the specified role and may expire. By accepting, you collaborate in good faith within that family's permission model. Obtain consent where appropriate before adding identifiable information about living people.
9. Intellectual property
WeTree software, design, and trademarks are owned by Askewsoft or licensors. Copyright complaints: legal@askewsoft.com.
10. Fees, payments, and subscriptions
WeTree may offer free and paid plans, optional family contributions, and optional donations. Paddle.com Market Limited (and its affiliates, collectively “Paddle”) is the merchant of record for paid WeTree purchases. When you buy a paid plan, make a contribution, or donate, you are purchasing from Paddle, and Paddle handles payment processing, invoicing, applicable taxes, and related buyer support.
Commercial terms for those purchases — including billing frequency, renewals, taxes, payment methods, and related buyer rights — are set out in the Paddle Buyer Terms and our Refund Policy. You authorize recurring charges for subscriptions until you cancel.
You may cancel a Family subscription through the in-app billing portal or Paddle’s customer portal. Cancellation stops future renewals; you retain paid features until the end of the period already paid for. Refunds are requested through Paddle as described in the Refund Policy.
Askewsoft may suspend or terminate access for non-payment or failed renewals after the paid period ends, consistent with §11.
11. Account termination and suspension
Askewsoft may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, upload illegal or abusive content, compromise security, misuse invitations, provide false registration information, or fail to pay applicable fees.
Where practical, we will notify you and allow a response before a final decision, except for urgent threats or repeated violations. Appeals: contact legal@askewsoft.com within 30 days.
12. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
The Service is provided "as is." We do not verify genealogical accuracy. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Askewsoft disclaims warranties and limits liability as described in the official terms below.
13. Dispute resolution
Before filing a claim, contact legal@askewsoft.com and allow 30 days for us to try to resolve the dispute informally.
Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence apply.
Venue. Except where prohibited by applicable law, exclusive jurisdiction and venue for any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service shall be in the state or federal courts located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.
